SO Derby’s next SKATER BOOTCAMP will begin with an informational orientation at 5:30pm, Wednesday April 10th, 2024 at the Medford Armory, 1701 S. Pacific Hwy. Subsequent sessions will be held on Tuesdays, 6-8 pm, starting April 30th, 2024.

ABOUT BOOTCAMPS

Bootcamps are 10-12 week series that teach skaters the foundational skills required to safely play roller derby at a competitive level. Our Bootcamp practices take place once a week at the Medford Armory. The first session is informational. Subsequent sessions will be on skates and skaters are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to gear up and warm up before the beginning of practice.

GEAR
Skaters need to have a helmet, mouth guard, elbow/wrist/knee pads, and quad skates to participate. We do have some loaner gear, including skates, that skaters are welcome to check out, if you don’t have your own gear yet. We do require a $50 deposit for loaner skates/gear.

WFTDA INSURANCE

In addition to gear, bootcampers will also need to purchase WFTDA insurance, which is specific insurance for roller derby skaters. WFTDA insurance is $75 for the year and needs to be renewed annually in order for skaters to be eligible to skate at practices, roster for games, and play on game day. DUES
Our dues are $50 for the 3-month series for bootcampers, and include weekly 2-hour bootcamp practices, mentorship from a SO Derby skater, and access to resources to develop knowledge of derby, strengthening, and building derby strong bodies.

SKATER PROGRESSION

Acquiring derby skills is different for every person. Some advance quickly, and others may need to complete bootcamp multiple times before achieving minimum standards for playing derby safely. Bootcampers are working towards proficiency in foundational skills. Upon passing their foundational skills test, skaters may contact home team Captains to arrange to attend Home Team practices.

REFEREE TRAINING

Skaters wishing to officiate may begin the Officials Training Program upon passing their foundational skills and rules test. Officials are never required to participate in any contact-skating. Officials in-training may assist at practices and scrimmages. Officials learn the basics of officiating from the Officiating Committee.
