What is roller derby? Here's some FAQs.

Roller derby is that crazy sport where roller skaters hit people over railings, right? Is there a ball?

There are no railings or ball. We are a flat track roller derby league, which is different from the banked track sport some may remember from the 70's. Flat track roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is open to all genders and ages! We highly suggest you watch as much flat track roller derby as humanly possible because, in our opinion, it is by far the greatest sport ever.

Wow, it looks confusing. How would I ever learn the rules?

You do not need to know all the rules to start training and practicing with us! You will learn the rules as you go by skating with league and absorbing information from the valuable resources we will provide. There's some great derby on YouTube, broadcasts of live bouts, and footage of archived bouts online. Check it ALL out to see the basics of how we play the game and to help you learn about the sport.  We are members of the WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association), which is the governing body of our sport. Their website contains oodles of information for new and seasoned players, as well as fans and anyone interested in learning more about the best sport around.

Do I need a derby name to skate? How does the "derby name" get decided?

No, you don't need a name when you start to skate, so don’t feel pressured to come up with one right away. You'll find one that works for you, or maybe your friends can help! DERBY ROLL CALL and TWO EVILS are great resources for seeing what kinds of names are already out there and registered. Similar to Highlander, the unspoken old rule in the world of roller derby is, "there can be only one!"

What kind of gear do I need to skate?

All skaters must have elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, a concussion-rated helmet, and of course some quad roller skates. SO Derby has a limited supply of loaner gear for new skaters who may not have all of their equipment on hand, so don't let lack of gear stop you from getting started!

Our local sponsor for gear is JACK'S BOARD HOUSE in Medford. Tell them you're with SO Derby and receive a 5% discount!

Will I get hurt?  Is it dangerous?

Roller derby is a full-contact sport and some players will inevitably get injured. Our first and lasting priority is to train our skaters with safety in mind. All skaters are required to master the basic skills of the game before being allowed on the track for true full-contact play.

I'm ready for this! How much is it going to cost me?

Derby will require an investment, but it’s much less than a gym membership! Initial registration is $50. SIGN UP HERE! Insurance through the WFTDA is required for all skaters and costs $70 per year (pro-rated after June each calendar year). Regular monthly league dues are $36. A new skater should also expect to invest $250+ in new gear if they have none.
